Default Rattling/Clunking like "tappets"

Hi all,

I ave noticed recently that when I am accelerating and goingthrough about 4,500 RPM and all the way towards 8 or so...I hear a kind of noise that sounds like tappets or something. Like a clunking/rattling in the engine. I say tappets as I had a Mitsi FTO before the S and it had tappet probs that sounded kinda similar. I use the redline 10W40 and I always keep the oil topped up.....although it has run down a bit before without me noticing.

My car is a MY00. Any idea what this could be? The noise doesn't seem to speed up the higher up the revs I go.

Thanks as always!

Adrian

Get a passenger in the car and see if they can locate the source of the noise. Also see if you can replicate the noise while stationary.

get it straight to a mechanic if i were you. The f20c engine does not have hydraulic tappets so it could be one has worked loose or they all need resetting.

however the fact that you say the noise doesn't speed up with revs sounds very odd. get it checked asap!

It might be the same thing my S2000 had, which was a broken/loose clutch fork.
It's an intermittent noise that sounds like it's coming from behind the centre of the dash. Sounds like tappets noise, but not as solid sounding. if you notice the noise gets louder as you turn through sweeping corners then it could be that. Also try dipping the clutch when you hear the noise, if the rattling noise stops with the clutch in, it's defo your clutch fork

Try a motorway roundabout to test

Check the valve clearances, or get them checked, that can sometimes make that noise
