Default RE050A

Im looking for some new rears 225/45/17

There are several types. of RE050 or RE050As

Normal - (BSW black side wall)
1Z
AZ
CZ
EZ
MZ
SZ
TZ
FZ

All vary in price. What do all the letters actually mean? Currently i just have the nomal ones in 91W, but the 91Y (a higher speed rating) are less.

Makes no sense.

MZ are the S2000 tyres, although they are apparently being phased out and the range simplified.

There can be enormous differences in construction/tread pattern/tread depths/structure etc.
The manufacturer can list all the options for you if you request it.

The MZ as many know is the type made as oem for the S2000.
And it is subtly different in a couple of ways to the others.
Some may even be runflats.

What I dont get is why the 91Y is cheaper than the 91W, I guess they sell more 91Y.

1Z
AZ - Alfa 147 fitment
CZ - BMW Z4 fitment (Runflats)
EZ - Lexus fitment
MZ - S2000
SZ
TZ - Merc C-Class (can be extended tyres)
FZ

Here are the ones i can find from my old OE fitment guide. Cost of manufacture and volume. Usually you find that extra load or higher load rating tyres are cheaper.

General rule of thumb is to find out all the cars in the same size tyre and choose the one that is closest in weight, power, FWD/RWD etc and then use that one or the standard version of the tyre.

I've just been out and checked my tyres and they are RE050A but cant find any other markings. Certainly no "MZ".

Do I assume they are the "Normals" mentioned in the original post (BSW ?)

BZs are others - designed for Mercs as I found out when Honda fitted one BZ and one MZ to my rears. The handling wasnt good.
