Default Rear control arm problem

36PFKL600244BEARING ASSY., HUB (NTN)£80.45 PFKL999666CIRCLIP, INTERNAL, 84MM£11.99
14PFKL989810NUT, SPINDLE (24MM)£4.84

I am assuming that this is all that is required for a rear wheel bearing? I have approx 1mm lateral movement in the offside rear wheel, it's the entire hub that looks to have play, the wheel is bolted up securely. I've done a search and bearing seems to be the most common problem but is there anything else it could be?

I have heard what i thought was diff whine at higher speeds for a little while and more recently a 'clunk' when pulling away but only really noticeable now i'm back on the 17s ..... the 16s masked the problem very well.

I had a similar problem a while back and it turned out to be the nut on the control arm had loosened slightly.

That's what it looks like in the movement - when i watched WIM do the adjustment the last time that's how the wheel moved when the bolts were moved - there is no play at 12 and 6 o clock, and none in any other direction than 3 and 9 - it's a very precise line of play. Makes the handling 'interesting' when you come on and off the power so I really want to get it fixed.

Will take it to my mechanic and ask him to cast a general eye over it before buying any parts.

I have a spare hub nut if you want to give that a try first?

If it does turn out to fix it, you can send me a new one at some point. If not, you'll have to order one with the bearing kit so you can send me one then.

PM me your addy if you want me to pop it in the post.

That's spot on that Gary - i may take you up on that but going to see what 'bloke with spanner' says first. I'm just driving it carefully for the moment

Just in one position, I would have a good look around before going for a bearing expensive,I agree with eSeM possibly control arm or the like.

Exactly the same as I was experiencing.

It was the nut on the wheel end of the control arm that had come loose.

I think my spanner waving skills are up for checking that, will whip the wheel off this afternoon and check that everything is nipped up nice and tight.

Part number 11 in this picture?

That is the right end of the control arm. Have you ever had these removed or replaced for any reason?

If it is loose you will probably need to give the end of the control arm a whack with a a rubber mallet before you can tighten up the bolt.
