Default Reluctant Cold Gearbox changes SOLVED

Hi all,

thought this was worth a post. I got my S2000 last week and found when it was cold that it did not want to change into 2nd gear, once warm though it was fine.

I spoke with Tom at TGM Racing in Fleet. He was very helpful and said that it sounded like the wrong gearbox oil had been used. I checked the car history and the oil had been changed in Dec. Tom said to buy Honda MTF3 gearbox oil. This was £12 per litre from Honda dealer. When the indy garage emptied the gearbox the oil was clear but also quite thick compared to the MTF3.

Low and behold the cold shift reluctance is now cured! Thanks TGM.

That's always nice when something simple solves things.

Mine was serviced and had the gearbox oil changed by them last year and it's still a bit reluctant sometimes when cold. It's going in soon for a service and mot so I might get some fresh stuff put in again

After buying my first s2000 just over 4 weeks ago I'm 3/4 through a full fluid change and just got diff and brake fluid left. The difference the clutch fluid and gearbox oil change made is amazing, I never expected it to be as good as it is, so can understand how wrong oil would screw things up.

Fantastic, the change from 1st to 2nd in mine while cold is stiff and notchy I'm hoping an oil change might do the trick too.

Off to get some MTF3! 2 litres enough ?

Yes, you'll need some sort of pump to get it in though :-) I used an EBay special to get it in. Don't forget the replacement washers for the fill and drain plugs. One suggestion check the correct part numbers on the forum and make sure the dealer (or wherever you get them from) gives you the right ones..... my local dealer didn't, and that's not usual by all accounts.

If this doesn't help then I would change the clutch fluid and bleed the system. Mine was very notchy when cold, really pain, got better when warm but not perfect. Now it's barely noticeable when cold and like butter when warmed up :-) really nice :-)

Cool.

Bear in mind the first 100 miles or so are like butter with brand new gearbox oil then the effect lessens somewhat, but its most likely improved it anyways.

I'm just talking from experience on the S2000 and other cars, though if it was shit to begin its bound to be a welcomed changed, i merely mentioning the honey moon period of 50-100miles.

Thanks will try and find the correct washers etc on ebay, failing that there's always paying someone else to do it for me !

How much did it cost you if you don't mind me asking ?

Cheers
