Default Replacement timing chain

I had a ticking noise about 4 months ago and ended up getting my timing chain tensioner changed, with the valve tappet clearances checked and an oil change at the same time. The bloody noise is back and when i took it to the garage i use (used to work with Honda and has an S2000 himself) he reckons the timing chain has "stretched" and will require replacing which he says is a big job. Anyone else had the same thing and how much am i looking at paying to get it replaced?

The timing chain can stretch and personally i think that is why some people seem to have gone through loads of timing chain tensioners as the tensioner is working right on the very end of its travel.

Can't help you with the cost though, sorry.

Check out this thread:

(If it was me I'd try sandblasting the tensioner internals before doing anything else - got to be the cheapest option and you'll soon know if it worked.)

Bought warranty with the car and just foned them to see if i could get it done under warranty...apparently the timing chain stretching (deterioration over time) isn't covered and only sudden mechanical breakdown is covered

Also, be careful. Exactly the same thing happened to me. Had TCT replaced by Honda. A few months later, noise came back. Was told by Honda that the chain had stretched. Quoted me stupid money to fix it. I didnt. Noise went away on its own after doing an oil change.

Now that my engine is dead, after taking it all apart, the mechanic fixing it now tells me there is absolutely nothing wrong with the timing chain and in fact, it looks almost perfect and its certainly not "stretched" in any way.

I dont trust dealers at all but obviously, thats my opinion.

1. I cant see that chain stretching.. it's pretty sturdy

2. If it did it's head off to replace it, new head gasket, exhaust gasket etc. you'll be looking at several hundred quid plus the parts

3. The F20C is a ticky engine by default, are you sure you're not being sensitive?
