Shell Optimax - 98+ Octane
There's a thread on the Evo forums about the release of Sheel Optimax in the UK. Apparently it's 98.6 octane average..?

If you follow the link you'll find an amusing FAQ explaining how you can overtake faster, best petrol ever, etc etc. Apply a big pinch of salt...
Anyone who's been running on 97 and lives near a Shell garage that has Optimax what to post any experiences?
I'm guessing that since there isn't any detonation on 97 that there'll be little difference... but I'm still curious.
Whether it makes any difference or not, it might push the other Petrol companies to do 98 again - even if it's only for the +1 in the advertising

I have a Shell station opposite the garage at work, last night when I went to fill up couldn't see premium unleaded, only something called Shell Optimax.
I checked with the staff who advised that this was in fact a 98 RON fuel which replaces the old Shell premium (97RON).
I was slightly dubious as the Pump didn't say 98 RON but they gave me a leaflet which explained in detail.
Sorry but I am not going to be much use in comparing it to 97 as I have only just gone over 600 miles so can't really compare with previous performance as I was still runnning in.
However the sticker by the fuel cap says use 98 RON so I am happy that I can now buy it!

I emailed Shell about my local station (was not on the list), they just replied that it will start receiving optimax from Sept 5th so I'll post my observations then.

I normally fill up at the local Total garage (97RON) because it's closer than the Shell. But I'll give the Shell garage a try and see if it does have Optimax.

Just thought I'd throw in an observation.
I've got and Integra Type-R and find that I get about 25+ miles more out of a tank of 97 RON compared to std unleaded.
Since I've never put anything but 97+ into the stook I've never had a chance to see if there's the same result - anyone noticed this?
Clearly this doesn't take into account different types of driving on different tanks in the IT-R, but the extra for 97+ starts to look better value.
