Yes, but I can put 6 months on next month then a year in Feb 09 which will last until Feb 2010 at the normal price.

I'm doing the same for the ATR, hopefully they'll backtrack on the retrospective tax anyway, but if not I'll have to sell one of the cars come 2010.

If it's due end of December just put a year on and that'll get you to Jan 2010.

If you really want to get the maximum out of it, you could put 6 months tax on in Dec, then declare the car off road in Feb, get your refund then put a years tax on in Feb 09. But it's not really worth the hassle.

There's always the chance that Darling will be forced to backtrack on this (like all his other great budget ideas ) in the Autumn when he reviews it.

(Or you could sell your car and buy my Black one which qualifies for cheap tax being pre '01 )
