Starting up
Haven't used my S2000 for a few days now and started it up this afternoon, it tapped like Roy Castle for a couple of seconds then settled down very quickly.
I know this is normal but surely some of this is down to the thin oil that is put into them, therefore am thinking that high performance engines in general must suffer more wear and tear on start up than normal engines, due to the oil grade?
Somebody please educate me!

ive got totally the opposite
i use my S every day , in the summer it rattled until oil pressure came up but if left for a couple of days its quieter on start up
now in the cold there is no rattle on start up????
the only difference must be the oil because fast idle is 1800 rpm where as in the summer its 2200 rpm
i think it may be the timing chain tensioner that makes a noise on mine as there has been many posts stating that when a new one has been fitted the engine is a lot quieter
i shall wait until ive got a bit more spare cash before i buy one to try it .

When you say thin oil, the service book gives a wide range of options - you may find your car isn't using that thin an oil.
Remember, its the 1st number of an oil that indicates its cold viscosity, and the lower the first number, the more suited it is to cold starts.
5W 40 oil helps in this sort of weather.
Got to remember though, its hardly an F1 engine, the S isn't anything overly special if you are just taling about startup and idle.

adman - Synthetic 5W 30 should be fine.
jonesy - depends on if it's good quality oil or not. Engine wear on startup is mostly casued by no oil film being present on the moving surfaces. good quality oils have additives to prevent this happening.
