It is a sub, and having it beneath the seat is no worse than having it in the boot. In fact, it may be better there as you may get a better 'image'. Although it's hard to tell where low frequency sound is coming from (which is why it's ok in theory to have a sub in the boot), in practice, you can usually tell the subs are behind you, although this is more often than not due to the subs volumes being set too high.

A good alternative place for a sub might be the passenger footwell, although you'd need a sub with not much depth to go there.
