Default Tech question

Firstly, my usual disclaimer - I'm a keen amateur but I'm also technically inept and have no skill or training, so please forgive me if my question is ridiculous.........

I've been tidying up my engine bay and the last thing on my list is replacing the three manky M6 bolts in the casting that the V-Tec solenoid sits on top of, but before I go ahead and do it, I want to make sure it's nothing too sensitive, i.e. It's not oil filled and has a gasket I could disturb, or is there any risk of not tightening it properly and causing a leak, or any other general cock-up?

Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers,

Im pretty sure when i fitted my torque damper it needed a clip thats bolted to the vtec solenoid to be undone and moved. I just undone the one bolt and then retightened once the clip had been moved and i have had no leaks. If you do it one at a time then you should be fine. Just be wary of replacing anything on the front edge of the cam chain cover as you can cause alot of damaged there as there's bolts to the cam guides with o-rings etc.

when you take the first manky bolt out - check the length against your new bolt - don't want it too short or even worse too long!

If you take it all off only a small amount of oil will come out which you can catch with a cloth, it's got a shaped rubber seal on it.

Don't put yourself down, if you don't ask you don't find out.Pretty much all my bolts in the engine bay have been changed to stainless cap screws. It makes it look so much tidier.

If you do take it completely off there is a gauze in there, just have a looksee if there is any crap in it.....If there is take it out for a meal, seriously it's worth removing to check if the is anything in the and obviously clean it before you refit it.

I have removed them before and you get a little oil spill, not too much. Be careful with torque ratings as these bolts are delicate.

Thanks all.

Mr Pitts - I've replaced every other M6 in the engine bay with countersunk stainless Allen screws and billet washers, and I've even had the valve cover off, stripped it and re-painted it, and it all went back together ok. It even started up and runs without leaking, so I'm doing pretty well so far.

Sounds like it's worth taking the solenoid assembly apart too.....
