Temperature gauge fluctuation- AEM V2, Still need help, home from the Ring
Hi all, my temperature gauge seems to fluctuate from just below the 1/2 way point to about two bars above but never any further. I don't recall it doing it before so I'm a little worried but I am in Belgium right now and onward to the Nurburgring tomorrow.
The cap on the overflow bottle has cracked, could this cause the issue? Seems odd to me as it's post the pressure cap
Where should the AEM normally read? I've read it'll be slight higher than the OEM ECU.
Would popping the thermostat out be a good quick fix?
Sorry if the spelling is aweful I'm a few G&Ts down and on my phone.
Any help would be much appreciated
Steve

Mine is like clockwork, just goes to halfway and never shifts. If you have a laptop you can hook up and check the temps i think
i'd be worried it's got warm and popped that lid. Your reservoir doesnt smell of exhaust or anything? Not using water?

No didn't bring the laptop with so can't plug it in.
The crack in the cap looks age related to be honest. The crack is full of dirt and grime. I managed to stop at a Halfords and pick up some glue. Cleaned the cap and the glue is setting over night so will give that a go tomorrow but if I can't fix it I guess I'll just be watching others on the Ring as I don't want to push the car now.

The expansion bottle is no pressurised, sounds like you might have air in the system somehow. with the engine warm try cracking the bleeder nipple on the intake manifold to expel an air that may be trapped.
is it possible that your ecu is giving a false reading?

Other possibility is a broken rad cap. I had a lot of expansion into the coolant tank recently and that's what it turned out to be. But it didn't affect the temperatures when on road, even on my supercharged S.

The AEM isn't quite the same as the OEM ECU when it comes to displaying the temperature. If you leave the fan switch to operate the fan then you will find the Coolant temperature gauge will display a couple of bars above half way before the fans kick in. At some point AEM must of got the conversion slightly out. There is also a long standing issues with the coolant temperature sensor where the AEM settings aren't 100% accurate.
Expansion bottle would not be an issue as like you said its not pressurised. If you can get a laptop and the right lead you will be able to change the fan settings in the AEM software to come on sooner which will mean that the coolant gauge will never move higher. I had this exact issue before and lowering the fan settings made it more stable. The car isn't actually overheating but because of the AEM conversion being abit off it causes you to panic thinking hang on its getting hotter than i remember.

If you do go 'cheap pc and usb' route, you might need this config link: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/s2000-en...-10-a-1136921/
Good luck with the on the road maintenances
