Burning oil would be blue.

Grey smoke is usually a rich mixture, you might be a burning off a load of built up carbon too - especially if you drive it fairly slow on the road.

To prove if you need a catch can just fit a container and put both breathers to it, then see if it catches anything no point wasting money if it's not needed

I empty both of mine out once every 2 to 3 months and i'd say i get anything up to 1/4 of a pint of murky brown goo out of one of them each time.

I have dual catch cans fitted, the one that comes off the first crank breather ( the one that goes to the plastic intake tube) rarely has anything in it.However the one that sits between the intake housing and the rocker cover is the one that collects most of the gunk.

Probably a combination of a lot of short runs and quite a few roundabouts.
