I've had a few quotes in the past and the discounts offered from fitting a tracker didn't even go halfway to paying for the fitting and on-going costs of having one.

Are they saying it's compulsory?

Well they have offered me a really good policy price of £450 ..next closest was 800.... but without the tracker the premium is the same but no cover for theft!!!...all a bit strange really..... not entirely against having a tracker just don't know where to start and wondered what peoples experience of these things were...

As per your sub title, tell your insures and find another one, if the tracker would have cost £450 (plus £170 yearly subs)take a bit more excess and get gap insurence.

My friend refuses to get a Tracker on the basis "if some scroate has ragged my car, I don't want it back"

Fair comment.

I'd get one if either / or:

Modified to the extent I'd want to get the mods back
The reduction in premium covered the cost of the unit

Personally, I think if an insurer is insisting on one being fitted, then it's so that they save money in the event of your car being stolen. Being as it's therefore going to save THEM a load, they ought to cover the cost
