Default Tyres

I saw the forum discussing tyres size for the (older) S2000 if you get a tyre other than Bridgestone. The fronts stay the same size, but the rears , you change to 245/45/16 for the proper width.

Does the lowered profile , from 50 to 45, affect the speedo and the odometer as the tyre diameter would now be slightly smaller? Your speed would read higher and miles on the odometer would add up more quickly.

I did the opposite (larger wheels and tyres) to an old 70s car I had, and the speedo and odometer were both inaccurate after the change.

Yes it's smaller, but by only 2.25mm.

It will make minimum difference.

Only 2.25 mm?? It's hardly worth a change of designation... so 5 mm profile adds 2.25mm to diameter?

I never was any good at geometry...

Any idea how much difference it makes? I'm more worried about the extra miles on the odometer than the speed, because it will read faster, meaning I'm slower; no more... er, fewer tickets.

Here:

Profile is in % of tyre width, not mm.

And the smaller the diameter will mean you are going slower than the speedometer is reading.

So lower profile does what to the car forgive my inexperience?

Thanks Hypersonik.
Like I said, I'm more worried about extra miles on the odometer than the speed. I might have to sell it in a year or so and don't want extra miles on it.

Muzzsjm,

Lower profile tyres sharpen the handling of the car, though it usually means a harder ride.
The newer S2000s run on 17'' rims with lower profile tyres than the older ones which run on 16'' rims and higher profile tyres. Even though the outer diameter of the tyres are the same, the newer S2000s have better handling.

Ah you have answered an unasked question of mine.

With a back problem not helped by the harsh ride ( and the many extra blasted potholes after this winter ) I was wondering if I would get a softer ride by swapping my 17" rims with low profiles for the earlier set up?

Sorry BB,
I'm not one of the authorities on the S2000; I've only had mine for less than 2 years, and it's a 2000 model. I have no idea what the new ones ride like, but I know mine, on the Bridgestones, rides quite rough. It skitters across the road on rough surfaces.

Maybe a different brand of tyre with softer sidewalls. Check some of the other forums here, I think they talk about using different brands. I myself am just getting ready to switch to GY Eagles which is the reason I started this forum; to make sure it's what I wanted to do.

Paul_J -

I'm pretty sure it runs off the drive wheels (I'm no expert!!!). In this case the rear. When I was a teenager, I had a big American V8 and used to do burnouts all the time. The speedo was definitely linked to the rears on that car.

If in doubt, do a burnout.

Ok S2000 gurus, apparently I misunderstood what I saw in the other forum for tyres. I thought one of you said that you had bought the GY Eagles.

I can't find them in 245/45/16. Not even on the Goodyear website. I found them for 17" wheels , but not 16s.

Does that mean I'm stuck with either Bridgestone or Toyo?
