I didn't know that either but usually drive with lights on.

Btw it's a MOT fail now if they don't work. My Merc just failed on it

Mine is a 05 model and they have always previously worked with the lights on and off, this morning I had my lights on but they were not working, even thought they worked yesterday evening

The confusion continues, mine is an 05 facelift. Headlamp washers only work when lights are on, quite good because at night when you just want to clean the screen and not douse the whole car in washer fluid you can just flick the lights off quickly to wash the screen.

I've just been out and checked again and the headlight washers do only work when the lights are on, I think I must drive around with my lights on so often that I though they always worked. Thank you

So my only actual problem is that the windscreen washers don't work, I will try new non return valves next.

I've had an issue with both my washer nozzles, I noticed that the small black plastic part that is attached under the outer nozzle has a tiny silver ball bearing housed within it.....over time it can ( and did ) come lose enough to move either end thus blocking the flow, a small nail placed inside the smaller end will push this out the other end.....both jets are now spraying perfectly. You'll only just see the bearing if you look closely apart from actually 'feeling' it move back and forth, hope this helps anyone else who was scratching their heads.

Bit of a thread resurrection, but I've just had the same thing - replaced with these; 2 x Windscreen Washer Hose Non Return Valve Straight Joint 4.8mm https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-Winds...m/401744582594

If that worked great, the ones from Halfrauds were worst than the originals, best fix for me was to remove the jets and give them a good clean out.
Whilst you are at it the nozzles from a jazz give a spray pattern rather than a jet much better cleaning.
