Also try wiggling your right ear whilst pressing the button. It'll be just as effective. 
I had something just like this. Pressing the button would sometimes not do anything, then switching off and on it and it generally worked. Then a few weeks of this and my engine blew up, but don't worry I'm not suggesting the two things are connected. With a new engine it never happened again, so I think it probably was a loose connection on the starter as somebody suggested.

all the key does is allow the lock to turn. The key itself is not part of the electrical circuit.

No it isn't , the barrel is purely mechanical, the ignition cap that sits on the end of the barrel provides the electrical contacts and at no point in time does it come into contact with the key.
OP it could be a number of things, battery, poor contacts, dodgy alarm, ignition relay, starter button. It won't however be a dirty key

Ooopsie fair enough ... My 5 series was the contacts on ignition barrel, not the key. Apologies I remember now, it was a year ago.

Right this happened again today, the green key symbol goes off on the dash an I hear the click; press the button and nothing.
After a few miniutes of messing around it works again. Starting to think it may be an earth or starter issue, but I have no way of testing it.
