San-Is buying a beater going to make your journey any more pleasant?
Hi Nige,

My job is in Colchester for a year. The mileage on my S is now 27K in 15 months which is more than I had planned. Petrol costs over this period are also high.
I still have my place in Surrey, where Karen will be staying, and I can't get a place nearer to work yet for various logistical reasons. So I'll have to rent.

You see....at the end of the day, and from the beginning of time.....it's always been the woman's fault!

It's not a comfort factor that's the problem. In fact, I have absolutely no problems with comfort in the S. It's mainly a cost issue.

Plus I'm sure that the extra glint on the metallic paintwork on the car I get will provide it with at least twice as much torque as the S......

Mark.....that's a pretty good deal....I'll go check it out.

OK-so you are stuck in that hell hole of a place for a yr

You say cost is the main issue. Have you done the maths?

So an extra 10K miles on the S-might push the resale down by 500 quid (rough guess)??

Lets say you get a car that does 100% better mpg. Thats a maximum saving of say 1200 quid.

so lets say 2 grand at worst to run the S.

then compare Vs a beater. You have to stump up the cash for the beater. Then there's a far greater risk of breakdown. You still have insurance/tax to pay-so thats 300 quid at least in that. Then theres the resale value-might be scrap. 10K on a beater in heavy traffic might push it over the edge.

so the expected saving is probably a grand. Is it still worth it?

What about one of these?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=63735

It's in your price range (only need to arrnage shipping!!). It'll soon get you round the M25, it's diesel so it's economical and has only had one careful driver!

As you know I've been test driving it today so I can recommend it! You'll get the back end out at every roundabout

Interestingly, the hospital in said hellhole has a Ferrari/Maserati garage round the corner from it!! You may find me reporting back on the test driving of.....ahem.....a 360 or quattroporte!

Difference in 2nd hand price according to Autotrader would be about
