Maybe this is just me and Pete, but I used the calendar A LOT when it was regularly updated. I pretty much live off the autox/track calendar (which is why I'm so willing to organize it). And now that I have a smart phone (which is becoming more and more common), I love to plan for and around S2ki meetups.

Not complaining. I just know how useful Google calendars is - for all the stuff in my life, not just S2ki. And the sharing part of Google calendars just seems ideal for a large and active community like ours.

I'd like to see a subforum too. Just don't get rid of the UMW Calendar.
Just make sure that the events are updated with actual location information and the track info is kept separate and i'd keep using it It still syncs to my phone gone or not!

Pat,

The current calendar is limiting that it's only meant for track stuff. We would like to have a calendar (or list) that shows track and autox events, but also meets, car shows, etc.

I'm not against Google calendars, so it's not completely decided that it's done in the UMW. We were just trying different ways to consolidate together more than just track stuff, yet keep it easy to use (be it for reading purposes, or updating purposes).

I also think that an "UMW Events" sub-forum may be beneficial if we think keeping track-type events segregated from other events is necessary.

BTW, thank you for the constructive feedback, it's of great value to Charlie and me, and most importantly to the community.

If I can make it this weekend to the meet in Lombard, I (actually, I think Charlie and I) would like to bounce an idea or two off of you.

The calendar for the laymen user only gives a one month view.

If I were to plan out long weekends based on events in the UMW for the Summer of 2010, the single month view was tedious to use for planning purposes

The interim idea was to sticky Patinum's original thread with the list of track events and dates. I would have like to keep the thread open (as open to locked in read-only state) but wanted to avoid any whoring, or inconsequential posts. Unfortunately, before any changes were made, that thread turned conversational. I did not and was not going to to edit that thread after the fact.

In anycase, Pat included a link to the post with the calendar, so it's not like the calendar was lost.

That's the interim.

The long-term solution would be/could be a dedicated sub-forum for a list of all known events in all of the UMW as a central point to see what's already planned for. We'd still do sign up thread in the main forum, but the sub-forum could give users a quick glance at what ALL events would be coming up for any given month (in a list view)...this way if someone is into AutoX, HPDE, and the show scene, he or she could plan and budget accordingly to what he/she wants to attend. Again, this hasn't been completely thought out.

The main intention was to reduce the noise up top so that when changes took place and were stickied, they'd be noticed.
Thanks for the clarifications, which make sense. I think there is merit in keeping the google calendar available / "stickied" within whatever format is ultimately decided on for an easier "at a glance" solution.

A question: I have been posting in this thread: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=767957

Is that one not supposed to be a discussion thread? I am not clear on which autox/track threads are intended to be purely "informational" and which are welcome to have discussion.

I used it too, I also used the other one to look at upcoming meets. FTR, I still have the ability of changing/updating it since Pete created it, but I don't know how many people actually used the other one, the track one is most definitely beneficial though. Both of these calendars were always locked, so it's not like anyone could know if they were being used since people couldn't post in them, just some food for thought.

I'd like to see some of these plans come to fruition, I do wish the way this change was done was handled differently, this seems a very backward way of making changes.

Wasn't there a calendar for meets and other events in addition to the track/autox calendar?

If you're taking ideas/suggestions now, here's my $.02. I really like the idea of a subforum for events. I know on other forums I belong to, it's nice to see all the recent and upcoming events in one area. I think once a meet is set, a CO should add it to a Google calendar. The calendar would also link back to the thread. To keep the work down, maybe the event organizer should submit the event to the CO, instead of the CO keeping track of everything. FWIW, creating multiple events in a google calendar is pretty easy with CSV files. I don't think the calendar should be available for everyone to update.

There are two calendars. While they are not stickied anymore, they are still available on Google Calendar.

One was meant for all S2ki events (non-track/auto-x events) and the other was for Track and AutoX events only. Anyone could subscribe to either or both and track them separately. In fact, I still have both syncing to my phone via push. One is red one is blue so I can easily tell them apart from my personal calendar (which is green.)

I am sorry if the layman were unable to change the view (there are buttons on the top right for week view and day view.) There were also instructions on how to use/subscribe to the calendars below them. All you had to do was scroll past the calendar view to the next post.

At one point I did suggest a third calendar for car show type events, but that was not carried forward. It could be done now, very easily.

When I was maintaining the calendar, I would always include the link to the actual event.

I think it worked pretty well, but I guess with no one maintaining it anymore, it wouldn't be as useful.

I second this idea entirely.

While a sub-forum just for meets would be nice (it would allow the main forum for general s2k discussion for locals, as I understand), a sub-forum shouldn't replace a calendar, and vice-versa. The calendar was incredibly awesome to have linked to my phone's calendars, as it helped me remember AutoX days and other meets. I remember having two calendars, one being track / autoX related and the other general-meet related, and I had them both synced to my phone and my personal Google calendars.

The calendars are still there...they just aren't stickied anymore. The sticky section was going unvisited because there were too many things stickied.

People weren't posting in open thread that were stickied, and view numbers weren't going up.

Charlie and I will work out some new ideas in the near future. Let things happen, and we'll shake out those things that don't work, and make sure those that do work, stick.

There haven't been that many new members lately. I suspect most of the existing members have already read the stickies. How long were you tracking the view counts? Again, I suspect there wasn't much of a need in the last few months as the weather has been poor and the activity level has been low across the board.

Yes, the calendars are still available on Google, but we need someone to commit to keeping them BOTH up to date to keep them useful.

I'm sorry, but from what I remember, the only topic that was stickied and open was the "Introductions" thread, the rest were always closed barring people from commenting in them. The Introductions thread was only for introductions, there wasn't much activity in that thread since most of the current active members had posted in it already.

I like the idea of a FS sub forum, but with the current format of no discussions, what is the purpose? The old FS threads could be pulled up via the search (when working) just like any other thread, so I'm a bit confused for creating a separate sub-forum if we are going to continue with one thread each month. Couldn't the monthly FS thread just be stickied, instead of a sub-forum?
