Default hooray

so i noticed a strange sound coming from my car a few days ago.
https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=326855

like i wrote in the other thread, the dealership thinks it's the rear differential. i don't know how sure they are of that diagnosis, but they said it'd be around $4200. co-worker thinks it could still be a CV joint or something, because it doesn't sound like a differential would make the noise that is coming out. i think i need to get a second opinion on the matter...are there any highly recommended mechanics that i could go to? or even someone here that would be willing to listen to it? $4200 is a bit much...if it's gonna cost that much i'd rather get the 4.56 gears and a reinforced diff, if that would take care of the problem.

just a little background info on the noise...the car is still running fine, except for that noise. it sounds like a timing belt problem, but is coming from the rear axle area. increases in rate as the car speeds up, decreases as it slows down. noticeable when the top is up, pretty faint when it's down. doesn't really get louder/softer w/speed changes, just faster/slower rate.

edit: also, the sound does not change when the brakes are applied. no sound when revving the engine in neutral.

thanks for any input, i'd really appreciate it!

$4200 yikes!! I don't think Wisconsins2k even paid half of that for his gears and Comptech diff.

well here's the thing.

if you have to purchase the gears/pinion, AND LSD AND DIFF HOUSING.... then YES it will cost you several grand (install included) at least.

people who upgrade to the comptech diff are sending in their WORKING FUNCTIONING diff as a core trade.

however, if you can drive the car, then you should not need a new diff housing. the diff housing is aluminum and iron, and if it had been breached... you'd know. and you wouldn't even be able to drive it.

even if you do go to the dealership, 4200 is high. I have been quoted at about 3500 in the past for a full pumpkin.

pinyo, thanks for taking a look at my car...looks like it is in fact the differential. and i'll probably be getting an '04 diff from htg. now i'm tempted to get the 4.56 gears, but i should probably hold off, haha.
