Hey if your willing to drive to Wisconsin I can get you a good price on a Viper. Really good price.
I may be interested in a DEI (Viper) alarm. Can you PM me a price and what model/features with that price?

Thanks.

DEI has bought up most of the competition in the last 10 years or so. So, Viper, Clifford, Rattler and a few others are all the same manufacture. DEI consolodated the products but kept the separate branding.

I have used quite a few Vipers in the past and been very happy with them. The range and usability are excellent. That said I believe the nature of alarms has changed. People get annoyed by alarms all the time, and tend to ignore them for the most part. So unless you can hear your own alarm (and recognize it as such) your alarm will be mostly worthless. What you want is an alarm that will let you know that your alarm has been tripped. So look for an alarm with a pager system.

The pager systems use the car as the transmitter, and the keyfob as the reciever. As such, range becomes an issue. Depending on how far you are from your car where you typically park will dictate what range you need. I have not shopped for an alarm in two years so I cannot comment on specifics anymore.

With a convertable it is easy to break into the car without setting off the shock sensor. So it is beneficial to get a proximity sensor that will trip the alarm if it detects someone inside the car. Keep in mind that the range of a prox sensor is affected by barometric pressure so it changes with the weather. If your field is too big, you can annoy people that walk near your car, too small of a field and it's not effective. Just something to keep in mind. A proximity sensor will likely add about $75-$100 to the price of an alarm.

I originally had my prox sensor mounted in the secret compartment. That was NOT an effective solution as it was too high. It would be set off by tree branches 5-10 feet OVER the car. I took the circuit board out of the case and remounted the prox sensor under the armrest. This offers a MUCH more effective field.

Did I read on somewhere on here that peoples' proximity sensors were creating false alerts on radar detectors?

Yeah, I have had trouble with that on mine.

I have been too lazy to get it done, but I plan to wire in a relay that will automatically disable the prox when the car is running.
