Default clutch problem.

hey guys, some may know that I'm a new s2k owner, bought used and learning stick with the s2000. on my drive home today I wasn't able to get into some gears, I had to almost force it in. My clutch feels different, it feels loose, loose to about engagement, and then harder all the way down. I'm not riding the clutch too much i don't think, I try to stay away from driving in stop and go traffic for now and I've never dropped the clutch. I checked out my Clutch fluid for the first time and it was low(below the top by about 1inch-ish) and black. I havent bled it yet, so that might help me out. If I have to get a new clutch, how much am I looking at having to spend? also im not sure if this matters but when the car is off, without using the clutch i can get in and out of gears easily.

The S2000 uses a hydraulic clutch, and you said the fluid is an inch from the top. It is possible there is not enough hydraulic fluid.

Try that first before worrying about a new clutch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the fluid got low enough to cause a noticeable change in the pedal feel, wouldn't it have let air into the hydraulic lines, and would need to be bled in order to fix the problem?

i siphoned it out just from the reservoir a few times, and it's already feeling better but im still going to bleed the whole line, because after a quick drive the fluid is already black. just time for bed so hopefully it'll be fixed tomorrow

Just an FYI, it's definitely a good idea to bleed the line after something like this has occured but it is by no means absolutely necessary. My old MR2 had a faulty tranny line and fluid would always leak out, my mechanic said I could either replace everything or just top off my fluid every week or so. Since I was getting rid of it [to get the S actually] I just opted to leave it and he said it wouldn't do any damage.

oh and be sure to pump your clutch a bit after you top off the fluid to make sure you get some pressure through and everything is good. I don't think you want any surprises when you're driving down the street. [guess how I know this too]
