when you disconnect the engine by pushing down the clutch, the engine rpms drop due to vacuum. however, the tranny mainshaft keeps freewheeling at a higher rpm since nothing is connected to it. by skipping 2nd and shoving the shifter into 3rd, the 3rd gear synchros have to work harder to match the mainshaft rpm to the countershaft. the effects might not be noticeable short term but skipping gears is a bad habit, especially in the higher gears.
ah i see, just that i thought if the shifter goes in smoothly all is good, guess not eh?

It appears that skipping gears in the S2000 is worse than in other cars. There are a lot of threads on s2ki that talks about this subject.

I read up on skipping gears too. Some people have had premature wear on the synchros b/c they skip gears.
I never skip gears because of this.

ie. When you rip your car 1st and 2nd and then throw it into 5th. You think nothing is wrong but your synchros are getting raped.
