I'm pretty sure the engine check and maintenance lights are different. You need an OBDII reader to look up the code for the engine check light. The most common causes of engine check lights are failed O2 sensor, loose gas cap and damaged engine. If the engine check light comes on and then off after a few days then it's most likely a loose gas cap.
The maintence required light is a mileage counter that reminds you it is time to get regular servicing done. When the light comes on, initially it was blink at start up and then it will be on constantly until it is resetted.
The Check Engine Light means something is wrong. It the light is blinking, it is recommended to stop driving and have the car towed to a shop. If the light was on and is now off, there will be a recorded fault in the ecu.
You can use the paper clip trick to get the ecu to blink the CEL light to tell you what the fault is, and then you can cross reference that code with the list on S2ki to see what is wrong.
