anyone have pics of a 17" rim with a dish (and 5 spoke if possible). I think my stock 17's look big enough, but I'm worried that the dish (setting the spokes in on the wheel), will make them look too small, and thus the need for 18's

I went ce28s in 18 inch (see sig). I noticed it being a little slower, but attributed it to the rears and fronts being wider.

I definitely wouldn't be able to tell those are 18s.

looks: depends on the rim. My 17s actually look kind of small.
performance: depends on the rims and tires you are comparing but it is possible to have a lighter tire/wheel combo in an 18 if the rims are nice and light and the tires are the same width as the 17s you are comparing to.

18s will improve steering feel (all else being equal) thanks to shorter side walls. They will also hurt the ride.

hmm interesting. 17" tyres are definately cheaper over here. but in regards to the wheels there is only a $250 AUD difference which is negligible.

i think the 18s do look better, however im looking to switch to 17" purely for improved performance/handling as a benefit. if the difference i will get between going to 17" as opposed to 18" in the same width wheel and tyres is only slight, id prefer the 18"s.

straightline performance doesn't fuss me much, its more so around corners that im interested.

as per my other thread here are the sizes i am looking at.

17 x 7.5 + 43 in 225/45/r17
17 x 8.5 + 40 in 245/40/r17

or

18 x 7.5 + 43 in 225/45/r18
18 x 8.5 + 40 in 245/40/r18

I'm pretty sure you want to knock down the profiles on those 18s if they are available 35 and 30

decided to go with 17", the cheaper tyre prices and reduced weight coupled with a smoother ride swayed me that way. now if i could just determine which offset to run ><
