I posted this last year and to my surprise no one picked up on it. 17s on front can take the pot holes better, 18s on the back look cool! Ferrari and Porsche do it all the time.
Has anyone tried this? is there any reason why this could be unsafe or affect the handling? Racers amongst you may be familiar with this technique. Any reason why this may not work on the road?
ya... it looks cool and I cant think of a reason not to do it on the street or elsewhere. The reason I did it was to give me a better selection of the tires that I wanted to use. I would have actually rather gone with 17s all around as I dont feel my car has anything to gain from stiffer tire sidewalls. But its not really a big deal with the 18s in the back... theres still no issues putting power down, even with 24.5" tall tires... which could have been a problem on a more powerful car.
Yes indeed exactly like this . Thank you
Any problems?
I think this is an intelligent choice both for Rim preservation and ride quality compromise. Also as you say you get a lot more choice.
I'll check out your tread for more detail
no problems because of the diameters. I should probably note that I dont really drive on the street with these wheels all that much. They're a "race" wheel and are slightly fragile. I drive on "maximum pothole alert" if I have to take them out on the street.
Ken, those are Circle Racing "Series 85" wheels... rears are 18x10.5" and fronts are 17x9.0". I'm afraid I dont want to reveal the exact offsets I'm using... but even if I told you, they probably wouldnt work well for you. I had some very specific goals in mind when I had these wheels made and as such, unless you're setting up the car the same as I am, the sizing is likey to not be a good choice.
The tires in the picture are Kumho ECSTA V700s... 285/30-18s rear and 235/40-17s front. I've also run Hoosier autocrossers in R:275/35-18, F:245/40-17 and road racers in R:285/30-18, F:245/40-17. In other words, I've only ever had race tires on these wheels.
thanx for the info, i've got a 2001 and would like to pick a set of wheels that a unique and are functional, I am leaning toward the work wheels,17 and 18s,but they are supplied out of japan through import development,so not readily available, thanx again, ken
What's wrong for using the sizes that work for road use for example 17X7.5 for the front with 205 50 17s and 18X9 with 245 35 18s for the back. The offsets can be the same as if you were using Jim's GT1s.
