Age of new tyres
A few months ago I got new front tyres from my $tealer and had them installed. The DOT date on them was 4002, or 40th week 2002. Is this normal that a tyre bought in 2004 was manufactured two years ago?
I also bought a set of barely-used tyres from a forum member, and upon inspection, found out that they were built in 4000, or 40th week 2000.
Even with proper cellar storage, how old is too old for performance tyres?

As someone who works for a tire manufacturer I would say that unless there is serious weather cracking (weather checking) then you shouldn't be worried.
This issue has been brought up lots, and there is no exact answer. I have seen 20 year old tires running on fire trucks, and 20 year old tires running on schoolbuses where you would think it would be more of a concern.
Governments have discussed best before dating, but it hasn't been a concern as of yet that it warrants lawmakers to do something about it.
