17's is more go than show. 18's are the opposite. If you can get some really light 18's, that would be better.
The main factor is getting wheels that FIT!
I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd go with 17's. Just because I can feel a decease in acceleration power with my 18's (could also be the fact that SO-3's are damn heavy-arse tires).

i just swapped to 18" S0-2's (from 18" S0-3's) and have noticed an immediate increase in acceleration......
17" or 18" tells you nothing about a wheel other than its diameter. The ultimate track setup for a stock-bodied S2K would be 18x9front and 18x10.5rear, with proper offsets. I posted a few manufacturers of custom lightweight wheels in a thread entitled '18" Volk CE28N' a few weeks back.
For generally available wheels though, there don't seem to be any 18" options whose central focus isn't bling-bling. You have a few options in 17", I recommend the Volk CE28N.
