Default Concerns about the LSD and Spin Balancing

While scanning through the Helm manual this morning I happened to read that "spin balancing", balancing a rear tire with it raised while the other tire is on the ground, could damage the LSD and should be avoided.

I'm wondering what symptems would present themselves if that happened? Anybody had this problem?

Why would you balance a tire on the car? The car doesn't have anything to do with the wheel and tire being balanced together. I am not sure what your manual would be refering to.

The jerks that balanced my tires last did this when their machine indicated that the tire was balanced but in fact it wasn't. They intermitantly spun the raised tire (while blocking the lower tire) and moved the clip-on weight around until the tire "fealt" balanced. Backyard mechanics at it's worst!

Running up the revs on one tire with the other motionless has GOT to damage the LSD. My question is:

What are the symptoms of a bad LSD?

Noises and a change in the traction of the car on a road surface that is different in friction from one side to the other.
Some tests:
Slowly drive a full steering lock figure "8". You should hear no odd clicking or ticking coming from the rear and your inside tire should not be scrubbing to speak of.
Do you get ice and snow where you live? If so, go out on a day when you have a slippery surface on the edge of the roadway and dry surface where the traffic tires normally run. You should be able to move off without too much difficulty as that is what the LSD is supposed to do for you. If you sit there and just spin the tire on the ice or snow and not really move, you'll something is wrong with the LSD.

Thanks xviper.

I've got a noise but its not a clicking sound. Its more of a groan when I start to move with the wheels turned hard toeither side. When the car is hot it gets worse.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

A "groan" is a bit hard to interpret over the internet. It could be simply the LSD doing its job or it could be something not quite right. My only suggestion is to find another S2000 in your area that you know is "newish" and in good condition and conduct the same procedure.

MyBad,
I posted a response a couple of days ago but it did not work. Let me know when you want to get together in a parking lot and we'll run the comparison Xviper suggested. By the way,our owners manual limits the speed and distance to be run with the compact spare provided with our cars. The reason for this is the possible damage that can be done to the LSD because of the difference in diameter between the full size wheel and tire and the spare. Good luck.

GOOD CALL!
One drive wheel should never spun at a speed that is too different than the other drive wheel. These bozos who spun one wheel in the air while the other one was planted on the ground didn't have a friggen clue.

I just starting getting ticking turning hard left, coming from the right rear. I'm not happy about it. Info about clicking needs to be collected in one place. I'm having a hell of a time remembering everything I've read about it in the last year and half, and some of the different remedies......
