Hankook R-S2

We had two people runing them at our autocross Saturday - a Miata and an S2000. The surface is highly abrasive Vietnam era military airport asphault - basically, polished rock aggregate. They reported the tires doing extremely well - grip level on par with the S02. And unlike the S02, it doesn't have a whole lot of leading edges - the uniform circumferential bands resist the feathering and abrasion that's often seen on autocrossed S02s on that surface. Another local S2000 owner will be using them to replace the worn S02s she currently autocrosses on so we should be getting some more information on their performance.

Although I haven't autocrossed them, I have driven them pretty hard through the local twisties. Unfortunately, the old Azenis were not offered in S2000-friendly sizes so I cannot comapre them. I have been running Kumho MX's for the last year and a half, though and the R-S2's are every bit as good as the MX's on the street. I have not pushed the car hard enough on the street to determine their limits or if they outgrip the MX's. My first concern was the potential for sidewall flex, but after adding air pressure to 'autocross levels' and heading over to a school parking lot one night, I thnk that it's not a problem. There is just a bit of tread squirm, but considering the tread depth, I'm not concerned. That short test leads me to believe that these are going to be somewhere between MX's and S02's, but I'll have a better idea of their limits after the 2-day autocross this weekend.
In summary, I am VERY happy with the R-S2's as a street tire. Dry grip is excellent. Wet grip is excellent. Noise -- with the top down I can't tell any difference from my MX's. As long as they last a while, I think they are a fantastic tire given the price -- $385 per set delivered.
