The S02 was already on the market. Honda and Bridgestone tuned the tire for the car. Honda asked for certain things from the tire so then Bridgestone set out to tune the tire for the car.
I hope this helps.

I have more than 3/32" left on the rears (at 7K miles) but I can tell my traction after warm-up is off. Sure it squirms less, but it also slides more. So, for me, the answer is to change them when I notice the difference, well before the wear bars.

Alignment plays a large factor into how your tires will wear over time. Do not expect your car to have in-spec alignment at 8000mi if you've never checked it -- seating of bushings will change, etc. An improperly aligned car will exhibit poor grip/handling earlier than normal.

S02's lose a lot of their (already marginal) wet grip before they're down to the inside wear bars. If you regularly drive in rain, replace them early (IMHO 8k-10k mi) with something more suitable to your conditions.

Clarification of the wearbar indicator's
Look at the "inside" picture at the top left. Located on the outside of the tread pattern,, you will see a triangle or diamond, (FYI on a Michelin Tire it is Bibendum- aka The Michelin man). Follow this indicator across the surface of the tire. You will see a raise in the groves of a tire, which is perpendicular to the tread pattern. When tires wear down and their tread level is smooth and even with these wearbars, then it is a good time to replace them.

Enjoy and be safe!

penforhire,

I had the same experience. At and just below 3/32, the car started getting twitchy.
