Default Speed Rating Compromised ??

Maybe this story has been told a hundred times but.... I'm drivin down the street w/windows down and I hear this ticking noise that is obviously coming from the front left tire. So i pull over and look and sure enough there is a pan-head screw almost flush w/tread. How long it is... I don't know. Luckily I am about 1 mile from Firestone dealer near my office. Guy patches me up for $18 and says "By the way..you now have 3 W speed-rated tires and 1 H speed-rated tire. Oh, and I'd be happy to sell you the replacement Potenza (orig) for $135."

What do you guys (and gals) think? My 2002 S2K has 2500 miles on it. Was the Firestone guy just trying to scare me into buying a tire? If patch compromised the tire thats no good because I live up in the hills and I do a lot of hard, fast driving like the rest of you. Just traded in a WELL worn 98 Prelude for the S2k.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated !!

A patched tire will probably be ok, depending on the nature of the damage and patch.

And for $135, those would not be the right tires.

Yeah, I suppose it WAS just a 1/4" screw. The price on one tire is on target though. TireRack.com has the Potenza S02 for $136. This is the stock tire on my 2002.

OceanS2k, You need to go back to tirerack and take another look... The correct front tire from tirerack cost $143.

and

The only 205/55WR16 Potenza @ $136 I can find is the SO-3 which is not the OEM front tire.
