Hey all, I'm on the hunt for some new wheels and tires for MY03. I had decided to go staggered to keep the factory specs. However, a set of OZ Ultraleggra's have popped up locally. I wanted 18's that were lightweight and was looking at these a while back but the price with shipping and new rubber put them out of my price range.

They are 18x8, +48 square. I asked what size tire he was running and he said 245/40/18. The reason I'm considering this is because I have a good set of 235/40's from my Legacy Spec B sitting on my patio not being used. They also won't really be used because the Subaru is my winter car, and my winters are still on it. I'm thinking I could put those on the OZ's till they're worn, then maybe put some 225's up front and 245's in the rear.

I did a search, but didn't see this asked. I know 245 square setups are pretty common, not sure how much difference 10mm would make.

235/40/18 would work, but they are the wrong size (too narrow, too tall). 245/35/18 or 255/35/18 are the two sizes you should consider with wheels like these. Depending on how much the size difference bothers you, you may or may not want to run the tires you already have. There is also the issue of the tires themselves. How old are they? How long have they been sitting? Are they the level of performance tire you would even want on this car?

 

255 will be pushing it on a 8" rim.

 

Whoops, you're right. Most 255 width tires spec at least a 8.5" wheel. For an 8" wheel, 245 would be what you want.

 

Yeah 245 would be best. You could run the 235 but personally I would sell those and get 245's.

 

With the crappy CAD dollar, a set of 18" tires are about a grand, add a grand for the wheels and it takes them out of my price range. That's why I was thinking of using the tires I currently have for this year, then looking at getting 225 and 245 tires next year to run staggered tires on the square wheels (if possible).

As for the tires, they're in good shape with lots of tread. They were taking off my Subaru in the fall when I put my winters on. They're General G Max AS-03's. Not what I'd be getting, but I just have them sitting around which seems like a waste. Was thinking they could be a solution for this season, then see how I feel about them.

With having to do some other things to the car, it'll be an expensive summer. I figured if I could use some rubber I already have, tit would be helpful.

 

The wheels would be a compromise as 8" is narrow for the rear and really isn't recommended for an aftermarket setup. You might as well run those 235/40, diameter isn't that far off from stock and won't cause any issues. Just be aware of the handling changes associated with the non-staggered setup. After they are used up, go with 245/35 all around if you like the non-staggered fitment. 225/245 staggered would also work but you are going to be in a situation where front is slightly taller than rear.

I would pass on the wheels if you haven't already bought them, just my personal opinion.

 

I haven't bought the wheels yet. They just popped up locally this week and I was intrigued about using the rubber I have currently not being used. It was just a thought because I origianlly wanted 18's and like the OZ's. Thought it could be a good opportunity to use what I have laying around.

Curious why you would pass on them? Because they're not staggered?

8" rear is a deal breaker for me, might not be for you. You can still run a 245 rear which would be an upgrade from AP1 wheels. Also, with a 235/40 on the front with a 8" +48 wheel, you will likely have to do some fender work.

 

That was my thought, if I could fit 245's on the rear when it was time to replace them, that was the plan.

That said, I'd like to stay away from fender work if possible. What kind of work would the front take with a +48 and 235's? Fender roll, pull, camber?
