Default The straight dope on wheels

Okay guys, lets see if you can answer a question that's been on my mind for a while now. What makes Mugen wheels so much more expensive than others? Forgetting style, are they any better than the tons of wheels that cost a fraction of Mugens? I'm talking street use only-not track.

IMO, it's partly the name. partly the build process, partly the grade of material used, partly the rarity, wait time, location( probably don't cost as much in Japan) and probably other reasons I can't think of at the moment.

Just get a set of Volk's, anything with the Mugen name on it comes with
a price tag.

Any JDM wheel company you are paying 90% for the name. Everyone can try and argue it but it is the truth. Even Volk any of those wheels. Most of the cost is because of the name. Not saying quality isn't good but your mostly paying for the name on the wheel as many many people are brand name whores.
Get some Rota's and call it a day. Excellent quality and 1/10th the cost.
Oh and don't turn it into a Rota hating thread since I mentioned the name fanbois haha.
I do have Volks but that is because I got a crazy deal on them. Otherwise I would have gone with Rota's.

with jdm companies i totally agree. most of it is in the name.

However, i would only buy forged wheels personally. regardless of the name. if rotas were forged hell i would have got them. or at least stronger than they are. lol. it really depends on the use. i drive in NYC sometimes and ive seen strong forged wheels get bent here. i wouldnt risk a rotas on these streets. and i also got a good price on used volks! only a little more expensive than rpf1s.

The Volks I bought got cracked in NYC I think. Those streets are absolutely the worst you can find though. Crack is welded and fully repaired now but it does show you that any wheel can and will bend/crack no matter what the price or name on it is.
Got my Volks for $450 for all 4 though so pretty sweet deal on them hahah. Took some restoring but came out looking excellent.

Only reason Mugen wheels cost alot (mf10) is because its discontinued... thats about it.

Ive gone through at least 13 sets of wheels, honestly my favorite would be the BBS wheels or the Desmond wheels I had... currently on my 5th set of work wheels right now and theyve been great.
