Symptoms of Improperly sized Wheel Spacers. and low thread engagement....
I installed 5mm wheel spacers on the rear wheels to bring them out a bit as my fronts have spacers on them. I am getting about 5.5 turns of the lugnuts with the wheel spacers in place with oem wheels and lugnuts. I was told that this setup can work safely, and is the maximum amount of spacer that can be run with oem studs. The wheels torqued up fine and they have stayed snug after a bit of driving thus far. If you don't have enough lugnut engagement what are the symptoms that develop ?, do the lugs get loose or do the studs snap ?. Just curious what to look for as I drive with this setup. I'll keep checking the torque setting regularly to be sure. Thanks for any replies on this.
I think 5mm will be ok on stock studs with just street driving. But if you autox or track I wouldn't leave them on. Im running 3mm for the front on stock studs, and have done multiple autox events and evem a big track day event. So far so good. Just remeber to tighten them every now and then.
I've always heard the "safest" number of turns for wheel studs is 7.
Spacers with built in studs not an option?
I'm assuming you're running some version of an APV1/2/3. Most people run a 25mm spacer for stock AP2s.

Not enough turns from the lugs will cause more stress on fewer stud threads, causing the potential for stripping them. If your lug nuts are currently holding at max recommended trq 85lb, then they shouldn't loosen up. Check them regularly for peace of mind if you like, but 5mm spacers have been used by many successfully on track and street.
If you ever remove your wheels in the future and notice the lugs are not threading on/off smoothly anymore and or thread shavings appearing as you remove the lugs, then this is a sure sign of over stressing the studs and or lugs and you should remove spacers and address.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I appreciate the info. My car won't see the track or auto-x any time soon. I'll definitely check the torque regularly and inspect the stud threads for any irregularities, that is good info to know.
I am running the 5mm rears with JDM ap1 bbs rims and ap1 tire sizes. I didn't want to swap the oem studs if possible, and my rims don't have pockets on the hub face to accommodate spacers with integrated studs. I'm running 20mm spacers on the fronts to clear the Spoon calipers and I had to drill pockets on the hub face to clear the oem studs. 20mm spacers on the rear may be too much ?
