For Street, and for 16", Continental Extreme Contact Sport & Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 are the best newest choices.

Of course, you can go to a stickier 200 treadwear tire... but it's a bit of a waste for street use. Wears faster, more road noise, needs to heat up to even get to its' stickiest/grippiest levels (not happening on the street), never going to see its' limits on the street.

Even with my Indy 500's (340 treadwear), I rarely see its' limits and rarely break traction on the street even when driving hard like a jerk.

You'd have to be driving like a maniac on the street to even see a 200treadwear tire's limits.

Either this, (above), - which is a great alternative - or go up to 17" wheels and get the Conti's in 17.
I have an ap1. I went up to 17" wheels, mostly because I like the look of them. I honestly don't notice much performance difference between the two wheels, (16" and 17"). I have a new set of Conti's I am about to put on.

Consider getting an alignment done by a good shop when you put the new tires on. My car was way out of wack even though it only had 8.5 K miles on it when I bought it. The alignment, $75, made a world of difference, as did good new max performance summer tires. These two things transformed the car.

I agree with Jah2000: "You'd have to be driving like a maniac on the street to even see a 200treadwear tire's limits." I drive in a spirited fashion on back roads in Vermont. I feel zero need for 200 tread wear summer tires. Good max performance summer tires stick like glue, they are quiet, and they last a little longer.

I'm in San Jose, CA. Thanks for the suggestions; I'll check them out.

There are reproduction AP2V1 17" wheels available, perhaps on Ebay. Some discussion here this summer regarding their quality among those who were just looking at them. Guys who actually bought them seem pleased with them.

Thanks, Chuck. So I can just buy AP2V1 17" wheels, slap them on my 2000 S2K, add the correct tires (215 & 245) and I'm good to go?
Can I buy the wheels from here, for example? Do these work?

There are 3 different versions of Oem 17 inch wheels for the s2k and they all fit all s2ks including ap1 and ap2. Yes, just slap them on with 215 in front and 245 in rear and u r all set. Remember when ordering the front wheels and rear wheels are different widths. The three versions r often referred to as ap2 v1, ap2v2, and ap2v3. Some folks use 225/45 and 255/40 tires and they fit also.
