Preferably not a sushi+beater meet.

Don't forget the soy sauce with ginger for dipping, and the hot or cold saki (take your pick)

Or better yet, how about some fugu?

I had to look up what Fugu is...

Some say the delicate chickeny flavour is the main attraction; others insist that fugu testes in a glass of hot sake is the best aphrodisiac in town; others are partial to the warm tingling and slight numbing of the lips (the pleasant symptoms of systemic paralysis and ensuing respiratory failure); but without a doubt the biggest thrill is the conspicuous hubris of the event, the showy risk-taking that involves so much for so little. It's bungee jumping for the indoorsy type; really, who cares what it tastes like as long as you live to tell the tale.

Thanks, but no thanks.

You all might be surprised after trying it...Although I'm not sure I would try it (fugu) over here in the States where it is not prepared a hundred times a day! When I was there (Japan) for the last several weeks I ate a lot of fugu and fish...and I generally do not eat fish (seafood yes, fish...no)...I gave my friend some rules for deciding where/what to eat...#1 - Get the best food, #2 - Saki or Shochu (hot or cold and lots of it), #3 - Beautiful company to dine with. We usually had 2 of the 3...It was a good trip. We didn't see much, and worked way to many hours...but the money we spent on dining was greatly enjoyed! Most unusual foods we ate (by American standards) were:
1) Fugu
2) Octopus
3) Large Red Fishhead (bigger than a dinner plate)
4) Mystery Fish that is killed, cut-up and brought out "squirming" to you to cook.

I don't think I ever saw a fork or knife at any table the entire trip...use chopsticks or go hungry!

I've had octopus (Tako) here before. It's pretty common on Sushi menus. The other 3 I've never seen before.

It's all about trying something new...the best advice...go overseas and try it all! And when you do go...stay away from all forms of food that are not local...it might be difficult...but it is well worth it in the end.
