I've ridden a 4-wheeler before. The throttle is on the handlebar too. Same thing with a jet ski.

The shifting IS the hard part with a bike. It takes some getting used to, but it's not bad.

i've 4-wheeled, jet skied, snowmobiled, but never ridden a motorcycle before, not sure whether i'm interested in trying or not.

the 4 wheeler I rode was a Polaris - the throttle was controlled with your thumb - brakes were like a bicycle & that was it. No gears to shift. I still rolled it.
