Last fall I took a trip out to Garner State Park with some friends to camp and drive the legendary Twisted Sisters. This is west of San Antonio, in the heart of what may be the most beautiful region of the Texas Hill Country. Temperatures in late October are near perfect, with cool nights and days in the 70-80s. Garner has running water, power, and hot showers, with miles of hiking and the Frio River running through it (nice for a post-drive dip).

Ranch Road 335, 336, and 337 are 130+ miles of scenic, twisting roads with elevation changes and glorious views. It's a popular destination for bikers, but overall traffic was very low. We were basically the only cars out there, so I'd like to change that this time.

Overall we had a wonderful time and are repeating the trip again this October 23-25. My friend has already booked campsites for our group of four, but I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to meet with us, camp, drive, grill, drink beer, swim, and look at the stars!

That looks like a lot of fun! Now camping.... real camping or cabins?

Car camping - park next to your site, 2 cars per campsite with overflow parking nearby. Our sites last year had power, water, a fire ring, and a grill in each site, with hot showers a short walk away...but the river was closer I think Garner has some rustic cabins but I imagine they book fast.

Campsites should be reserved in advance, but are assigned on arrival. Last year we got two campsites next to each other but there is no guarantee.

My group is planning to leave in the morning Friday and take our time getting out there. There's a ton of open country road between Austin and Garner to explore, and a legendary burger shack. Looking at a 500 mile weekend

Post this up in the Houston section you might get some of them to join you at the sisters. Drove from Mobile, Alabama to do those great farm roads called the Twisted Sisters. Will look into this again but vacation time is almost gone. We will see guys. Enjoy

I'm in San Antonio. That is a great drive. I'll keep my eye on this thread and may join you on the 24th. Depends on what my program director has scheduled.

I just realized this is F1 weekend and my buddy won't be able to go. I am going to have to back out and do it 2 weeks later.

All Garner campsites are full! There are other campsites/lodges/cabins for rent nearby along the Frio River if anyone is still considering this trip.
