The beauty of tuning the S2000

I can still remember the day when I bought my first 1999 Monte Carlo Blue S2000. The anticipation for almost a week was building up until all paperwork was completed and the dealer called me on the phone to come over and get my S2000. The feeling of buying something new or used, especially a car that has to offer so much excitement and fun to drive is a unique experience. My first mod that day was to remove the connection of the headlight washers; it is a European standard option for washing the headlights from dirt. However there was a common issue on earlier models and the driver’s elbow could press by accident the button which sprays water and covers the entire car! Well, it did happen on delivery and I removed the center console and disconnected the button; that was my first mod in my S2000 and just the beginning to discover the beauty of tuning the S2000.

Before we go on, I have to mention that this mod cannot be described as tuning; but even a mod, no matter how big or how small, suppose to make the S2000 better. Well, here comes a debate over this subject, especially when exterior, cosmetic, wheels or body kits are involved. Some people like it and some don’t. But this is not what we analyze or criticize here. The beauty of making changes on your S2000 is because it feels good. I mean the entire process from searching S2KI to get ideas, to seek for all sorts of products new or used by members, or even some new deals by our sponsors is what really matters; and this is only a part of the equation.

What about saving few bucks to get what you are looking for. What about the waiting time, before your goods arrive at your address? What about your excitement about your latest purchase of something, new or used, that will change your S2000. Oh yes, you share this excitement with your friends and members at S2KI Community. So, your goodies arrived and you’ve got them in your hands, time to install them by yourself (DIY style) or take it to a shop and do it for you. In the meantime you took some shots to upload them and share your new additions on S2KI forum. The S2000 Gallery and Modifications & Parts forums are so full of excitement now and members follow you all the way until the finished product… your Honda S2000.

But what does it take us to the world of tuning? Is it because our car lacks of something? Does it miss a few things that will make it better? Someone will answer here, “Yes mate, we need more torque, remember?” No problem here; let us tune the S2000. So this is just a small example to add a bit of torque by going NA or huge numbers by going FI. However, many owners want to keep their S2000 as stock, but to my understanding over the years of ownership and browsing the forums, they end up doing couple of small mods in their S2000. How about a front lip spoiler guys, shall we add one just to spend some money? It’s true, I’ve done it and I keep doing it. Perhaps tuning is like a virus, but a nice friendly virus infecting not just me but the entire community.

At some point, people want to make a change in their S2000. Maybe, they got bored of their beloved car, but then again tuning is also like an adrenaline injection to get your spirit back on track… well actually back in the S2000. How many of you out there are addicted to tuning, or at least you find tuning to be a part of your co-existence with your ride?

NOTE: S2KI welcomes the opinions of its members on the S2000 and on all topics related to the S. Should you feel the creative urge to pen a few words then by all means do so and PM Energetic, Aashish2 or Onehots2k OR send us links to what you would like us to write about and we will feature you (or your community) on the S2KI Home Page.

This is the S2000 of 07RioS2k. The front is the splitter by Coastal Metals and the sides are the DownForce Side Carbon Diffusers.

There’s no such thing as a 1999 S2000. The first MY was 2000.

I’m fairly new to the S2K but I must say, coming from the RSX community, I have absolutely no desire to modify this car. Sure, I’ve replaced the front speakers with ones that aren’t blown, and I may throw on some wider tires, a Front sway bar and adjust the alignment to suite my autocross needs but beyond that, I just don’t think this car needs anything additional. The car is superb as is.

For me making mods to my S are more about making it MINE! Its one of the reasons I love the s2k, it has its own rarity, you cant pass another s2k w/o the driver looking over your way. Its like joining a club just by owning one. Putting the mods you like in make it your own unique S, it sets you apart from the crowd.

Stock car for me please. Why mess with perfection :D

My only mod is a counter sunk shift knob :P

But I love the modded cars and all the power they put to the tarmac. My preference though is to keep my S in stock trim.
