I'm back
Good lighting too!
Did you get to see how they uncover the terracotta soldiers? It looks as thought they'd have to scaffold over them and reach down but I just can't imagine how they get down in the middle of the groups and still do delicate work.

They are pretty much all broken. The clan that overthrew the Qin dynasty broke into the mausoleum, sacked it and set fire to it causing the roof to fall in.
The photos towards the rear show the statues being fixed out of the pit so I guess they remove the pieces, restore and replace.

Interesting to note that the figures are colourfully glazed/painted when unearthed but the colour oxidises quickly. They are hoping for a way of protecting/restoring the colour.

Shanghai was at the end of our trip and we were pretty shagged so we didn't go out at all. We were supposed to go out with some of the guys one night but by 10 o'clock they weren't back from shopping and we had crashed.
That said, one night we went to Xintiandi (a popular westernised area) . It was recommended to me by a friend who runs a noodle shop in Mosman but is a Shanghai local. They were having Fashion Week with shows and events. Ate at a restaurant called Herbal Legend. Fantastic food and the girls were very impressed with the bathrooms. I'm sure there is more happening later but we headed off with the tour.

Oh yeah, and Shanghai is massive. And entire sides of buildings are visual displays. But the ones I like the most were the buildings that were outlined in lights. Looked like old vector video games like Battle Zone.
