I used to have a spare battery for my laptop back in the mid 90s. I didn't use it enough to get a second one for any of the laptops I have had since. The main problem is you have to actually charge it using the laptop. That is too cumbersome for most devices.

Heck I hate doing it for my video and still cameras... having the two batteries charged is a pain in the neck. Unless you are talking about rechargable AA,AAA batteries that you can get a separate charger for.

Not sure any future MP3 players will be big enough to take even AAA batteries.

USB being the new defacto standard for charging many devices you might be better off with one of these offerings (Take special note of the Altoids pack):

I can charge my ipod at home, in the car or off my laptop. Jump on ebay and grab a wall adaptor and a usb car charger.

Not as cheap as the hype led me to believe they would be. Will definitely be looking more seriously at the HTC Diamond than an iPhone.

So what am I missing? I can set the time on a VCR but I can't understand phone plans.

Am I right that on a $79 a month plan I get 700Mb of data, $550 worth of text and calls.

And on a 24 month contract I pay an extra $2 a month for a 16Gb iPhone.

Does anyone know if my Optus 2G sim would work on the iPhone 3G?

I'm looking at the same plan as you Aus. $79 Yes plan. Would 700Mb be enough? I'm a little worried about the $0.35 per MB if you exceed that quota. I'm hoping they have a Mb monitoring system that you can log on like 3 does.

My contract is up for renewal in a few months. I was thinking maybe going with the Iphone but my research indicates that it does not support a lot of the bluetooth based features I have come to rely heavily upon.

Namely: Dial from the computer, Send SMS from the computer, Access to call records/sms records, Talk-Through (Use the computer as a BT earpiece).

Granted all of the information I found is based on the old Iphone, still there is no information saying "the new one will have those features"

So I may go with something else if anything. One of the Nokias that VF bundles with the $79 plan has a a frigging 5 MPx camera and a Carl Zeiss lense....
