Woohoo! I am now an Australian Permanent Resident
After being here for almost 4 years on a sponsored business visa (457) I have just been approved for PR!!
And apparently under the new citizenship rules I will be eligible for citizenship in 12 months.

Good question!! If anyone has been through the citizenship process here please let me know what's involved.
Cashout, getting the PR was really quick, about 2 months, because my company sponsored it. If I was to apply independently it would take around 18 months. We just stayed on the 457 as long as possible to make the most of the LAFHA!!

The citizenship test is a new thing (this year). Supposed to be about Australian stuff, like history, etc.). The only "test" that was there when I did my citizenship back in 94 was whether to choose to pledge alliegance to the Queen or to Australia. You didn't even have to be proeficient in English ( I was though, or they wouldn't have let me into Uni.)
