Default Problem for all ya Mechanical Buffs - my car is acting weird

Well the deal is: I am having an Oil Consumption Test carried out on my car at the moment due to it's bloody ridiculous thirst for oil. That involves me coming in every 1000kms and they will monitor oil usage.

Yesterday I was driving on Nepean Hwy... from a traffic light I decided to give it some stick (as you do in an 80 zone! ) ... climbing thru first gear, VTEC kicks in at 5800 ... and then bang... at 6500-7000 it jolts back to "normal" mode... and struggles to the red line... ok 2nd gear... same thing. I decided to not go over 5k for the day.

I took it to Honda today and htey said they've never heard of such a thing... I am going back there at 3:30pm today...

Any thoughts/ideas?

Sounds like low oil pressure. The VTEC solenoid allows oil to engage VTEC. Low oil pressure equals no VTEC.

I assume that as your revs rise your VTEC solenoid is being starved of oil and disables VTEC.

That's interesting. I sometimes get that with my S, where I get no VTEC when the engine is at normal temperature. My oil consumption appears to be similar to Iggy's.

Could this be something to do with our "spirited driving" ??? hehehe.

I hope to have some answers later today... but so far I think Aus's explanation seems plausable. Not sure how it can be fixed tho!

Steven, how long have you had this happening? Mine started recently... a month or so?

Iggy,
I first noticed it last Spring after an evening drive. I checked the oil and it was OK. A got a little paranoid trying to think what it was, so I "worked from home" one day so that I could test it through the National Park north of Sydney. It seemed OK but every now and again I notice that VTEC hasn't kicked in.

I have had the plugs changed with the recall and am building a list (noisy gearbox, oil consumption etc) for the dealer to work through before Indy !

Guys i remember having this issue with my s also, it happened twice and at the time i was trying to think what it was....thought it was bad fuel the first time as i had just put petrol in it, but i ruled that out the second time as i had not put fuel in it.
Aus"s explanation makes good sence, he did by the way inform me what the wooooooooooo sound was from my car when it was stationary.

OK guys, my car is in service at the moment. They drove it (with me in the car) and pointed out that it struggled over 5000rpm by slow acceleration in 1st gear... so they decided one of the spark plugs is not firing properly... they gave me a nice new Civic until the end of the day while they check which plug it is and put a new one on.

Hope they are right!

On another note: they had 2 red NSXs and formerly David Woods yellow S2000 (with hardtop and rollcage) in there too... *drool*
