Audi S4 - Horror story or one bad four door?
First, is it Oddie, or Owdie ?
Second, I think the S4 would be a nice step up from the Maxima. However, anyone I know that's ever owned and Audi has had nothing but problems. What is the good the bad and the ugly with owning a turbo Audi?

Ow-dee.
I considered the S4 for a long ass time. Still haven't bought a car though...waiting for mine to die. But here's what I've found from my own test drives...
S4 is one fast ass little b*tch that's mad fun to beat on. I drove both auto and manual. If you're lookin' at the manual...personally I didn't like the stick. I'm semi-new at stick shift cars and have driven nothing but Honda's until this Audi, and I couldn't stand how rubbery and useless it felt going into gear. The backseat is weak. If you've got a Maxima, I imagine you make some use of the space it offers...and I think the S4 would just be a pain in the neck to own in that respect.
Other than that...I think the car is fun enough to drive. Personally if you're gonna do some crazy work to it, than the stick would be fine 'cause I'm sure there are some remedies for that God-awful shift linkage. If you just want it for cruising...I think the automatic is aight...not great...but good enough.
Sorry I can't give you all the reliability stats...never owned it. But tha's my take on it as far as the drive goes...

Meaning an S4 allows for less cargo room than a Maxima??
I'm most concerned with reliability of AUDI in general, especially since you are throwing turbos into the mix.

I love my a4 as much as the 2002 "S" - two completely different cars but I love them equally. As far as Audi reliability goes, I have had no problems and I have been beating my Audi like a red headed stepchild. If you have a problem they have a 50,000 mile maintenance program that covers everything including all fluid changes. I service I've had done was always done perfectly. Audi has changed it's ways since that problem of car lurching forward in park. Audi is now first class in my book and one of the best German sport sedan.
