6 50 pound bags of sand behind the wheelwells and a shovel in the bed should fix a lot of the bizarre behavior of a pickup on ice/snow. And if it doesn't, hey you've got sand and a shovel

But yeah, a light truck can be pretty piss-poor in the winter. On the other hand, a 4x4 can also be pretty fun to drive in winter with a little more weight.

ps - wait, what? You moved back to CA? When'd this happen?
Moved back in September. Got an offer that included all moving expenses, plus we'd wanted to move back near family and friends, so it worked out great. Except for the vehicle part (for me). My wife's Civic does just fine in the snow.

I will probably try this, regardless, since it's bound to improve the truck no matter what (I can sell it with that in the bed, if I decide to sell).

I also considered a Honda Ridgeline (big interior, good reliability, carlike ride) but the gas mileage is still pretty bad and I don't truly NEED a truck. Heck, I may just keep my truck for the summer and for yard work/carrying a dirtbike/etc, etc and get a new vehicle. It's not really worth enough to make trading it in worthwhile...

I had an 05 A4 (1.8T) Quattro and we just turned in my wife's 07 328XI a couple weeks ago.

The Audi AWD is far superior to the BMW X drive, it simply is apples/oranges IMO. The Audi was 100% trouble-free for the 3 years we owned it, the BMW ate through its brakes with under 20k miles and the run flat tires were replaced due to noise issues - but all FOC so no big deal. I preferred the Audi to the BMW, even though the BMW was quicker I just did not enjoy driving it very much.

If you're worried about maintenance, get a CPO'd whatever, the BMW & Audi CPO programs are very good. Another thing, if you find a car you want, take the VIN# to a dealer to check to see if the car had any issues before you buy.
Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling Audi would have the better AWD system (it's "bread and butter" for them) but wasn't sure about comparative maintenance or reliability.

I have a dealer friend here that can get me off-lease vehicles at cost from the manufacturer. Not sure if he can get CPO vehicles (I'm not sure if the dealer or the manufacturer does that for Audi's) but I can check into it.

Too bad SUVs are excluded; otherwise, 4Runner is full of winz. From that list, I'd pick the RL SH-AWD - luxurious and beautiful.
