6 50 pound bags of sand behind the wheelwells and a shovel in the bed should fix a lot of the bizarre behavior of a pickup on ice/snow. And if it doesn't, hey you've got sand and a shovel
But yeah, a light truck can be pretty piss-poor in the winter. On the other hand, a 4x4 can also be pretty fun to drive in winter with a little more weight.

I also considered a Honda Ridgeline (big interior, good reliability, carlike ride) but the gas mileage is still pretty bad and I don't truly NEED a truck. Heck, I may just keep my truck for the summer and for yard work/carrying a dirtbike/etc, etc and get a new vehicle. It's not really worth enough to make trading it in worthwhile...

I had an 05 A4 (1.8T) Quattro and we just turned in my wife's 07 328XI a couple weeks ago.
The Audi AWD is far superior to the BMW X drive, it simply is apples/oranges IMO. The Audi was 100% trouble-free for the 3 years we owned it, the BMW ate through its brakes with under 20k miles and the run flat tires were replaced due to noise issues - but all FOC so no big deal. I preferred the Audi to the BMW, even though the BMW was quicker I just did not enjoy driving it very much.
If you're worried about maintenance, get a CPO'd whatever, the BMW & Audi CPO programs are very good. Another thing, if you find a car you want, take the VIN# to a dealer to check to see if the car had any issues before you buy.

I have a dealer friend here that can get me off-lease vehicles at cost from the manufacturer. Not sure if he can get CPO vehicles (I'm not sure if the dealer or the manufacturer does that for Audi's) but I can check into it.
