Default C6 driveline problems?

A co-worker of mine owns a new C6 Automatic and is having drivetrain problems. She tells me the car had a slight grind when it was new and it has gotten progressively worse. Fluids were changed and they told her to drive it a bit to see if it improved. If not they informed her it would take about 20k worth of work, as they admitted a similar repair on another C6. I realize the scenario is rich with ambiguity but other than knowing what color the car is, she doesn't know anything about it, I am just trying to help her out by getting some information from people that have firsthand experience with the Vette or may have heard something about a production problem (I did some research and found out about the 1st. gear lockout issue, but nothing on trans/diff grinds). For 20k they must be talking about the whole back end south of the driveshaft, no? Anyone have any ideas?
On her behalf, thanks.

Changed the rear diff of the vette for 06 because of those problems.

Check out the problems on http://www.corvetteforum.com/. She would have gotten a 6 speed auto and a better rear end if she had waited til 06....

$20k, hahahaha....that's list price on a new motor, transmission, differential, and all related driveline parts. Heck, toss some new wheels/tires in there too.

A grind from where? Not enough information.

Now, the six-speed automatic is a definite improvement for 2006, HOWEVER, the 4-speed automatic is a tried and true transmission as the 4L-65E is a tough automatic and not prone to failure except in very rare, fluke circumstances.

I agree, 20k is ridiculous. Grind is from rear.

I have not heard about this problem. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but likely not in great numbers.

Spoke to her yesterday, they are replacing the whole back end, she says (I will try to find out what and why).
