now this is just getting out of hand. I lean left of center on most issues (not too far left, read: I hate hippies), but the liberals in this country have been hijacked.
let's quit dicking around with legislation that attempts to attack "issues" that, best case scenario, would result in a victory so marginal as to not even be a blip on the radar.
I think that many well educated people would agree that auto emissions standards have reached such dizzying heights that nary a modern automobile should even be considered as a considerable source of pollution.
Every car in California combined polluting as much as they possibly can results in emissions outputs that are only a fraction of a percentage point of what a "clean" factory or power plant produces.
Jesus, this is infuriating.
Think about it. If it is 80 degrees outside or more, your car's interior will get hot thus necessitating the use of air conditioning to some degree or another. It doesn't matter if your AC is going full blast or is on the low setting, your AC's ability to impact your gas mileage is NOT ####ING VARIABLE. it is an on or off scenario. If your AC is on, therefore the compressor clutch is engaged, the engine experiences more drag due to the load of the compressor.
Again, this is only and on and off situation. Once, the AC is on the drag occurs. The speed at which the air comes out of the vents is only a matter of controlling an electric fan and DOES NOT INCREASE THE DRAG ON THE ENGINE.
My point is, if it is even remotely warm and or sunny outside and you are driving a car that has windows (most of them tend to come that way) your car's interior will get hot enough to require use of the air conditioning. If you are driving a white car with white interior it will still likely get hot enough to require you to use the air conditioner. The difference would be that you need more air conditioning to cool the dark car vs. the lighter car, not all air conditioning vs. no air conditioning.
I'm going to repeat this one last time: Once the air conditioner is on, the load on the engine occurs and your gas mileage takes a slight hit. Whether you have the AC on full blast or the lowest setting will have no impact on your fuel efficiency. It is only an issue of whether the AC is on or off. Period.
If you have to use the AC at all, you might as well use it full blast.

Why not just limit HP/weight numbers! HP = amount of gas consumed (basically, not necessarily true but its a good indicator) + weight = how much HP you need to get it moving!

buying back old clunkers (as is currently being proposed at the fed level...i think?) would probably be millions of times more effective than this. just plain stupid. lawmakers have nothing better to do apparently.
