My sister and brother in law (who is also an ex owner and occasional lurker here) had one for a couple years and hated it. They had many MANY stupid little things go wrong with the car. They owned a V6 and I have to say it was gut-less. It was not nearly enough engine for such a heavy car. We co-own a boat and they were not able to tow it. We had to tow it with our Pilot or 4Runner as the V6 did not have the oomph necessary for safe towing. The car did have nice fit and finish exterior and interior wise and it drove well when it was working. Unfortunately, with the weak engine and numerous little demons, it is not a car I would recommend.

I had a 2005 V6 and I loved that thing. It had a few problems here and there but nothing to cry about. Off road it was a monster. I did not get to tow anything with it but I would recommend the v8 as the 6 barely gets itself around. LOL

Forgot to add. I would get a LR3 V8 that thing is a monster as well and has great power. Not to mention the air suspension is a big plus. I currently have one and I love it.

RossoS2k had a 2004 v8 model that had so many problems that he got VW to buy it back under the Lemon Law:

And then VW resold it, with a clean title!:

Gotta love the internet.
Touareg is a sweet ride no doubt. But dont expect it to be reliable. or get decent MPG's. We were seeing single digits in the winter with ours. (V8)
If you can pick up a fairly loaded one for under 20 its probably a good vehicle for the money. Have a VW dealer go thru the vehicle and check it.
Your probably looking at new tires every 12-15K too.
oh yeah, and VW screwed me after they bought the truck back from me. VW credit reported the lease as not being paid for 3 months AFTER the truck was returned to them. Several letters to VW and the 3 credit cos yeilded no results. Im still battling that. So in the end I got the short end of the stick.

my uncle had one for about two months, 2006 V8, but every other day something would malfunction, a bulb would burn out, some fuse would blow, something would malfunction and the onboard computer would freak out and strand him somewhere, finally he just got rid of it. Just make sure you have a second non volkswagen car that you can rely on while its in the shop...
