Honda Extended warranty program
my dad just purchased a new Cr-v and it came with a free extended warranty program. The warranty program gives you exteded warranty to 80k miles or 8 years. Whichever comes first.
The dilemma is, Honda is willing to give my dad a credit of $1850.00 if he decides not to keep the free gift.
Should he keep it or just get the credit applied to the loan?
Do most problems occur within the 36k warranty program?

In early 2005 I picked up an '01 Civic EX sedan with 17,000 miles on it. I paid for the extended warranty and put another 130,000 miles on the car before selling it 3 months ago. I never used the warranty for anything.
My Civic was also a manual transmission and probably stood a greater chance of being abused by an inexperienced/careless driver.
Based on my experiences, if I were in your dad's shoes, I'd give back the extended warranty and take the money credit. Assuming he drives it responsibly and maintains it well over the vehicles' lifespan, I'm sure it will deliver well above average reliability.
Lastly... We still have Mom's '98 Accord EX. It's a 4 cylinder automatic with 150,000 miles. Runs well. The "Check Engine" light is always on, but it's 10 years old now and things are bound to start crapping out at some point. Plus, I doubt anything they find to be causing the issue would be covered under the warranty anyhow.
You can keep the warranty, but I doubt it will be of much use.

We have the Acura extended warranty for our RL. Last month our AC went out, and thankfully our extended warranty covered it + took care of our front brakes (were squealing even after the TSB) too.
Small price for peace of mind.. especially if youre getting it for 'free'.

Yeah, not free, when I bought my civic it as teh same deal; on my last stage of negotiation where I asked for a price with the warranty, the dealer out of submission said I;ll throw it in... and then said screw it, your choice, I'll throw it in or take if off the price of the car... so I took the deduction.
Most of the bugs will get worked out early on (I had a window seal problem early on, other than that perfection), and the crv should be rock solid. Take the money man.

Most problems occur early on, the standard warranty should cover most of them. My sister has an 07' CR-V, purchased in late 2006 and have yet to use the warranty.
